Air Sampling

We provide various services for air quality and assessment purposes. These are often requested by local authorities as a condition for site development proposals near an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA). Concerns raised may relate to the risk to future occupants inside the proposed buildings or outside in amenity spaces. Our assessments review the air quality information and monitoring as undertaken by the local authority as well as to make recommendations to any required mitigation. Concerns may also be raised as to the local air quality from construction dust, or increased nitrogen dioxide and ozone levels from an increase in traffic. Assessments are undertaken and reports created to indicate air quality management and recommendations.

Asbestos Surveys

Our asbestos management service ranges from the identification of asbestos containing materials to undertaking complete assessment surveys. We work in accordance with the former HSE document MDHS100 (2001) and the current HSG264 (January 2010) Asbestos: Surveying Guide.

Asbestos surveys are largely carried out as obligations under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 and can include: the production of a survey report to highlight the presence/absence of asbestos materials in building, the production of an asbestos register to identify, register and update the condition of asbestos-containing materials, the production of an algorithmic risk assessment for identified asbestos materials, an on-going asbestos management programme, and impartial advice and third party quotations for the removal or treatment of materials.

Contaminated Land Investigations

Contaminated Land Investigations have been an important servicee, particularly since 1995 when land contamination became an important environmental issue. Contaminated Land Surveys are largely requested by local authorities who require developers to investigate land contamination and create solutions if there is a risk to future users of the site, controlled waters or environmentally sensitive habitats. They can also be requested by local authorities or environmental agencies where there is a potential cause of significant harm. The survey is carried out in two steps:

  • Phase 1 - Desk study to gather information
  • Phase 2 - Intrusive Study to visit and test the site.

Compliance Assessments

We provide environmental auditing and regulatory compliance services for all types of businesses. Our services can include: an informal site walk-over with advice on environmental and health and safety issues, a basic company environmental compliance review to assess environmental obligations and provide advice and recommendations, a full environmental review on all aspects of the company including health and safety areas, an environmental review with the production of a company environmental policy statement, and the preparation and installation of full environmental management systems.

Please contact us to discuss our services in further detail.

COSHH Monitoring and Assessment

We can provide one-off assessments and training or can take the roll of a health and safety site manager. Our services include: an informal site walk-over where we provide advice on health and safety issues, a full health and safety assessment including areas of non-compliance and recommendations, training and advice on the implementation of safety procedures, and regular assessments to ascertain that measures are working effectively (these can be undertaken yearly quarterly as required). We are dedicated to providing companies with thorough training and advice to implement safe procedures in the workplace.

Due Diligence Reports

We can assist companies with the production of due diligence reports that are required as a critical component to support the purchase of land or business. An environmental desk study can form a part of the due diligence report and these are usually carried out as Phase 1 of contaminate land surveys. Our services are largely tailored to suit individual requests.

Please call our team who will advise you on the most effective routes and services to take for your project.

Ecological Appraisal

Ecological or habitat surveys are a common requirement for planning applications - largely where habitats may become disturbed as a result of the proposed development. An initial assessment is often required as there are many forms of ecological surveys available. Our services offer an ecological appraisal survey for the detection of protected flora and fauna and/or potential presence through appropriate habitat. This covers our service in its simplest form. More specific surveys can be undertaken with aims to highlight features of particular ecological value, identify potential impacts as a result of the proposed works, identify issues that may have legal or planning implications, and to recommend further work required to fully assess the value of the site and the potential ecological impacts of the proposals.

Environmental Audit

Various environmental reviews or audits can be undertaken for all types of companies. These audits can allow companies to conform to legal requirements and duties as well as to set the company apart from competitors in the market by looking at all aspects of the company and its activities. This can include energy use, waste production and disposal, materials storage, occupational exposure to hazardous substances, on-site drainage, environmental emissions, potential impacts on the locality, license and permit requirements, and more. We provide an informal site walk-over to provide advice on environmental and health and safety issues, a basic company compliance review, a full environmental review, an environmental review with production of company environmental policy statement, and the preparation and installation of a full environmental management system.

Please contact us to discuss our services further.

Environmental Desk Studies

Our environmental desk studies are widely carried out as part of contaminated land surveys but can also be undertaken for due diligence assessments. For contaminated land surveys the Phase 1 Desk Study is undertaken to gather information to assess the presence and significance of on site land contamination. This can then enable risk assessments to be undertaken if necessary. As part of the survey, a site walk-over is carried out to visually highlight any possible contamination areas.

Fire Risk Assessment

Fire risk assessments apply to all non-domestic premises and apply if you are responsible for the business premises, are an employer or self-employed with business premises, responsible for part of a dwelling where it is used for business purposes, a charity or voluntary organisation, a contractor with control over premises, providing accommodation for paying guests or if you are responsible for common parts of blocks of flats. The Fire Safety Order 2005 evaluates the risk of fire occurring, evaluates the risk to people from a fire starting on the premises, removes and reduces the hazards that may cause a fire, and removes and reduces the risks to people from a fire. Our fully trained staff identifies, assesses and provides strategies to meet all legal obligations regarding fire safety.

Flood Risk Assessment

We undertake flood assessments for potential developments that are at risk from fluvial, coastal and groundwater flooding. Our in-depth reports utilise Environment Agency modelling data and historic data to assess and provide mitigation strategies for the likelihood and potential impact of future floods. Risk assessments are required for planning proposals where the site lies within Flood Zones 2 or 3 as classified by the Environment Agency’s Flood Mapping.

Health & Safety Assessment & Training

We provide one-off assessments and training or can take the roll of a health and safety site manager. All services are tailored and priced accordingly depending on the services required.

LEV Testing

Our LEV testing and assessments ensure customers comply with regulations that determine whether flow velocities and capture volumes are appropriate for their purpose in accordance with HSE guidance (such as HSG54 Maintenance, Examination and Testing of Local Exhaust Ventilation and HSG37 An Introduction to Local Exhaust Ventilation). Regulations include Regulation 7 of the COSHH Regulations 2002 which requires that the exposure of employees to hazardous substances must be prevented or controlled, and Regulation 9 of the COSHH Regulations 2002 which requires control measures to be undertaken to comply with regulation 7. Regulation 9 also requires LEV systems to be examined and tested every 14 months.

Please visit our website or contact us for further information.

Noise Monitoring

We undertake noise assessments and surveys to ensure compliance with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005. These surveys can be requested for various reasons: as planning conditions to assess the effect the development may have on the background noise levels or to assess impact of existing noise levels on new developments, and to prevent or reduce risks to health and safety exposure to noise at work.

Waste Audit

Waste auditing is a complex service that aids companies or individuals to deal with various waste issues. This is commonly to comply with regulations such as the Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005, the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007, or to assist the application of an Environmental Permit from the Environmental Agency.

Water Sampling

We provide various services for the assessment and analysis of water. This can include sampling of groundwater and surface water in relation to contaminated land issues and general water quality testing including potable supplies and surface water. Water sampling assessments are undertaken in order to comply with various legislation such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Health and Safety Commission Approved Code of Practise L8 Legionnaires Disease: The Control of Legionella bacteria in water systems (Jan 2001), and HSC Approved Code of Practise L8. Please visit our website to read further information regarding water sampling and regulations or contact us at Apple Environmental where we will be happy to provide you with all the information you may need.
